BRIAM Project (2024-1-ES01-KA210-ADU-000251084): Bridges across the Mediterranean

The first in-person meeting of the BRIAM Project successfully took place on March 22 and 23, 2025, in Anderlecht, Brussels, marking an important milestone in the development of this international collaboration dedicated to Mediterranean modal music.

Hosted in a warm and creative environment, the two-day seminar brought together musicians, students, and music enthusiasts from different cultural backgrounds, fostering exchange, dialogue, and shared artistic exploration.

Renowned musicians Kyriakos Gouventas and Christos Barbas led the workshops, offering participants a rich and immersive learning experience. Kyriakos Gouventas focused on Aegean music and ornamentation, guiding participants through stylistic details, phrasing techniques, and the expressive depth of the Greek violin tradition. Christos Barbas introduced contemporary approaches to modal composition, encouraging participants to explore new creative paths grounded in modal systems and intercultural perspectives.

The seminar created a vibrant space for interaction, where tradition met innovation and participants actively engaged in collective music-making and discussion.

A highlight of the event was the special concert on Saturday evening, featuring the workshop leaders alongside outstanding guest musicians from Greece and Turkey. The performance embodied the spirit of BRIAM, offering a powerful musical dialogue across cultures and traditions.

This first meeting in Brussels set a strong foundation for the continuation of the BRIAM Project, strengthening connections between artists and contributing to the preservation and evolution of modal music in a contemporary context.
